Just before waking up today I had an anxiety dream. I’ve grown to kind of enjoy anxiety dreams. They seem to be the kinds dreams that I remember most frequently. This dream took place on the day of my college graduation. I was waiting in a room, preparing to walk out onto a field with my fellow graduates. Then I realize that I’m supposed to be giving a speech of some kind and I’ve done absolutely nothing to prepare for it. There’s a couple of other very smart looking people in the room with me that are looking over notes and mumbling to themselves like they're rehearsing their own speeches. Read more »

PALEFACE: "a neo-folk icon" (The Flagpole, Athens GA) is currently on tour as a three piece band in support of his Ramseur Records follow-up, One Big Party. The band celebrated the release with a special guest-performance alongside The Avett Brothers at NYC's Radio City Music Hall, followed by US and Europe tours. And soon after, PASTE Magazine premiered "PALEFACE: The Making Of One Big Party", a short documen
tary which follows the band as they record their new album and travel across the US, including clips from live performance in NYC and Boston's The House of Blues. Paleface has released over a dozen records including two major label releases, and he's collaborated and performed on three albums by The Avett Brothers. He's also influenced and inspired a wide range of musical acts, from electropopsters YACHT, to Grammy Award recipients Kimya Dawson (The Moldy Peaches / Juno), and Beck who calls Paleface “a big influence on my early work” on Annie Leibovitz’s book American Music. At the moment, Paleface is in the process of writing a new album to record later in the year, and in the meantime he's self-released Multibean Bootleg Vol.3, a collection of raw demos, live performances and outtakes.

SCHWERVON!: A two piece rock band....Nan plays drums and Matt plays guitar and they both sing. They lived in NYC for 15+ years and have recently relocated to Kansas City with their cat Gummo. While living in Manhattan, they recorded and mixed the bulk of their music in their apartment as well as curating a DIY music hub called Olive Juice Music, which centered around their own local and online community. They all presently reside in Shawnee, Kansas with Matt’s Dad Harry. Together, Schwervon! have produced 4 full length albums, 2 seven inch vinyl only singles, in addition to touring the world and performing with The Vaselines, Belle and Sebastian, Kimya Dawson, The Thermals, Jeffrey Lewis, The Essex Green, Comet Gain, Herman Dune, Veronica Falls, The Trachtenburg Family Slideshow Players and other luminaries.

MMM show writing@ Davey’s Uptown, KC 8-15-12 Weirdo Wednesday Supper Club

Today, I came up with the idea that when talking to or about people, it might be helpful, to try and act as though they suffer from some type of chronic back pain. Nothing totally debilitating. Just some sort of dull pain that makes life slightly more difficult on a daily basis...Life is difficult on a daily basis. And whether it’s a physical problem or what have you it’s just good to be aware of that…for everyone. Sometimes I forget that. As you get older you get more sensitive to that stuff because you actually are starting to feel that physical pain of just existing. But everyone’s got something going on…from the day they were born. I feel like it would help a lot to just assume that most people are overcoming some kind of pain or distraction in their life, to some degree, just to muster the ability to focus enough for a conversation with another human being. I think it’s good to appreciate that. Read more »

For the first time since our recent move to the Midwest, Schwervon! returns to the the East coast. After a little break from our virgin Midwestern tour, tomorrow we'll be heading back towards our old home town of NYC. Our return route will take us back through the steamy South, where we'll have a chance to revisit areas we discovered on last summer's recording adventure in Memphis, TN. The original inspiration for this tour was our friend Steven asking us to play the Beacon Riverfest. Thanks Steven. We're especially looking forward to playing in Ohio for the first time. Nan managed to line up 3 shows in Cincinnati, Toledo, and Akron. We're looking forward to seeing old friends and making some new ones. I was in Des Moines, Iowa the morning I got the news that Dashan had passed away. My band Schwervon! had just played a show the night before for about 10 people. After the show, the door person speechlessly handed us a five dollar bill (our cut for the evening's performance). We managed to sell a couple of CD's and a T-shirt so the night wasn't a total, financial, loss. Nan and I were feeling good about the show itself. Later that night we shared a vegan taco pizza with our host Christopher (Christopher the Conquered) and his girlfriend Avalan. We felt like we had made some new good friends in Iowa. The next morning, there was a text on my phone from two separate people, in NYC, saying that they had some bad news. When you get a message like that a lot things run through your head. The first thing is: Someone died. The second is a flurry of people and accompanied scenarios. Was it an accident? An overdose? A fire? Was someone murdered? Was it more than one person? When I got the news the next morning that it was Dasahn who had died in his sleep the night before I'm sad to say that his name was one that rolled through my head when I first got that text. Super Moon Pix/ Schwervon! Maximum May Flowers Tour!/ Midtown Tune Up/ Random Stuff
It's a rainy, post Supermoon (sorry my pic doesn't really do it justice), Sunday morning in Kansas. But I'm sure by the time I'm done writing this it'll probably be sunny and 80 degrees. I've heard a lot of people use the phrase: "If you don't like the weather just hang out for a little bit." to describe their local weather. But I've never found this statement to be more true than in Kansas. The first two weeks after moving here I found it pretty frustrating at how often the weather forecast totally blew it. But I have much more empathy now for KC weather people. The weather in here has more swings than a PMSing baseball team.

Nan and I have been gearing up for the Schwervon! tour all week: practicing every day, as well as checking out a couple of local shows, we bought a Club for the car, and filled in my Dad on Gummo's complex feeding schedule. Today seems to be the perfect day to print up some new T-shirts. First things first. We finally managed to pick up our new (used) car on Friday. We got to take a trip out to Liberty Missouri. She's a 2006 Suzuki Aerio. I guess she's actually a he. On the drive home Nan officially named him Waylon Jennings. Waylon has a couple of battle scars but, for the most part, a very sound motor. We are looking forward to seeing how he performs on our up and coming Schwervon! Tour in May.

Weirdo Wednesday Supper Club @ Davey's Uptown, KC (4-18/23-12)

Weirdo Wednesday is a weekly supper club hosted by local personality/multi-instrumentalist Amy Ferrand at Davey's Uptown in Kansas City, MO. The vibe at Weirdo Wednesdays is probably the closest I've come to the cabaret/ "anything goes" type atmosphere that I grew to love at places like the Sidewalk Cafe's Open Stage and Show & Tell at the Bowery Poetry Club in NYC. Davey's Uptown is a Kansas City Institution. You can smell the history as soon as you walk in the place. The wood paneling and vintage pinball machines make it an ideal spot for happy hour locals. The other half of the bar (formerly Jimmy & Mary's Steakhouse) opens onto a sizable performance space with a back bar and a nice PA and stage. Read more »

This Is My Condition, Folkicide, Holly Hunt & Scraping Teeth at the Percolator Art Space in Lawrence, KS (4-13-12)
I lived in Lawrence, Kansas for 5 years from 1988 to 1993. I saw a lot of good live music in that 5 years. At various times I saw: Nirvana, The Pixies and Urge Overkill at the KU Student Union...Fugazi, Jesus Lizard, and Helmet at the Outhouse....I saw: Sonic Youth, Henry Rollins, and Tool at Liberty Hall. I saw The Butthole Surfers, SWANS and even Bo Diddly at the Bottleneck. I saw countless other great shows at house parties and pop-up venues that have come and gone. I don't remember the last show I saw in Lawrence, Kansas but it was probably during this time. I could never have predicted that it would be nearly 19 years before I saw another show in Lawrence, Kansas. I could never have predicted that I'd be driving a rented Chevy Sonic with my girlfriend of 13 years to the next show I would see in Lawrence, Kansas. I could never have predicted that the next show I would see in Lawrence, Kansas would include 2 old friends from back in the day, sharing a bill with a band that was voted 1998's "Worst band in America" by SPIN magazine, in a back alley Art Space. I could never had predicted that I would be enjoying a delicious bowl of Tunisian Chickpea Breakfast Soup and sipping a local Kansas City Boulevard Pilsner beer as I watched said bands. I never could have predicted any of this but I sure did have a great time. Read more »

NYC to KC Week 1 (April 4/5/6, 2012)
It was a nice sunny day when we finally arrived in Kansas City. We didn't quite make our 2 day goal. After spending the first night in Western Pennsylvania we were going to try and push through but we ran into a nasty rainstorm just outside of St. Louis. After a bit of a crisis trying to figure out how to turn on the U-haul window defoggers, we decided to grab a hotel and drive the remaining 4 hours the next morning. We figured it would be nicer for Nan's first look at KC to be during the day after a good night's sleep vs. two o'clock in the morning after 12 hours of driving.

As we rounded downtown KC and headed into the suburb of Shawnee (where we will be living for at least the next 3 months), I couldn't help but notice what a job the "strip mall" has done on the landscape here. I'm not saying that Shawnee was ever anything like Mayberry or that the concept of the strip mall had not already been introduced to the neighborhood well before I left. But the thing that seems so disturbing, aside from the illusion that all the buildings along Shawnee Mission Parkway (the "Main Street" of Shawnee) appear to be more or less part of one very long building no more than 2 stories high, is that now they are all bathed in the same bland tan or neutral earth tone color as well. I gotta say it makes a real, lack of, impression on someone just driving through. And if I hadn't planned on living here I would probably have completely forgotten the experience by the time I'd reached the edge of town. I really don't understand this trend of light neutral earthy tones- don't get me started on the waiters in khaki pants and white tennis shoes look- but it feels like the entire city Shawnee has been modeled after a retirement community. Dog Got Your Cat Tongue is the sixth song to be released from Schwervon!'s Memphis sessions with Doug Easley (Pavement, Sonic Youth, Cat Power). Urban life informed this tune, especially the 2003 NYC blackout and the frequent circling of NYPD helicopters over Nan & Matt's rooftop in the LES. Cougar Pride is the fifth song to be released from Schwervon!'s Memphis sessions with Doug Easley (Pavement, Sonic Youth, Cat Power). The Cougar was Matt's High School mascot. Though the Cougar is a fierce predator of the animal kingdom, "Cougar" also has another meaning in American Pop Culture. A Cougar is defined as "A woman ages 40 years or older who preys on younger men." Nan's High School Mascot was the Bearcat. The question still remains: How can a Bear be a Cat?

The Sidewalk Cafe (MMM show poem 3/7/12 @ Sidewalk Cafe, NYC)

It was never my intention, growing up in Kansas, to live in New York. I remember just one time, as a kid, drawing a picture of me in the future. I was wearing black boots and long black trench coat. It was something like a cross between Robert Smith and The Crow. I had long stringy hair and pictured myself walking through some dark rainy alley in a city that I imagined was New York City. That’s when I made the decision that I was more of dark vs. light kind of guy. This had nothing to do with morals mind you. It was kind of more of an aesthetic decision. It’s made all the difference in a way. But other than this memory, for 24 years I don’t recall a particular attraction towards New York aside from the girl that I followed here. Read more »

On Nan & Matt’s second date, they went to Coney Island and rode the Cyclone. Unbeknownst to Matt at the time, Nan is scared of roller coasters. She has not gone on one since. This song was inspired by summertime in NYC and confronting your own personal cyclone.

Houston & Delancey (MMM show poem 2/16/12 @ Sidewalk Cafe, NYC)
I was walking home last night and a delivery guy stopped me and asked if I knew were Houston and Delancey was. I looked at him kind of weird. I’m sorry my friend but that’s impossible, I said. Anyone who has lived in the city long enough knows that these 2 streets run parallel to each other. He showed me a receipt and it was printed right there: Houston and Delancey. What a mean trick someone must have played on this guy. It seemed like he couldn't speak much English. I had to just walk away saying, "Sorry, I can't help you." I thought a little bit more about it. I flashed my high school geometry class lesson about 2 parallel lines that never intersect. I imagined this poor guy riding his bike down a Houstan street that stretched around the globe, for the rest of his life, forever searching for it’s never intersecting Delancey street. I started to think of how different the things used to be on either sides of these two streets throughout history, separated by a mere 3 blocks. And how each coming year the lines that they used to represent, like many neighborhoods around the world, are being blurred and redrawn. Read more »

Daydream Ration is the third song to be released from Schwervon!’s Memphis sessions with Doug Easley (Pavement, Sonic Youth, Cat Power). Matt says his original inspiration for the duo taking the trip down south was listening to old Grifters albums, and specifically reading a very conspicuous advertisement for Easley-McCain Studios on the inside fold of the Grifters’ first Sub Pop Release “Ain’t My Lookout”.
