Join the award-winning documentary filmmaker Jeff Feuerzeig for a screening of his film The Devil and Daniel Johnston, followed by conversation and Q&A. The film portrays a musician and outsider artist whose intense personal struggles with mania, depression, and schizophrenia have intertwined with a career of fantastic creativity. Kurt Cobain called Johnston the “greatest living songwriter” and his work — including songs covered by Beck and Pearl Jam and visual art shown at galleries around the world — continues to generate an avid international following.

The Devil and Daniel Johnston won top documentary directing honors for Feuerzeig at the 2005 Sundance Film Festival. New York Observer film critic Matt Zoller Seitz called it “a true nonfiction film, a movie that tries to do with sound and image what journalists like Nick Tosches and Norman Mailer tried to do with prose, bending prose into poetry to find a more subjective route to truth.” The Onion A.V. Club’s Noel Murray called the film a “harrowing and aesthetically keen portrait of madness and artistic inspiration.”
