Reading: Geoffrey Pleyers “Alter-Globalization”
There are global contestants and global movements actively challenging neoliberal doctrinaires. In his newly published book “Alter-Globalization: Becoming Actors in a Global Age,” Geoffrey Players provides a sweeping and scholarly account of these social movements as they grapple to democratically organize across the globe. Please welcome Geoffrey Players for a reading from his book and a discussion of the tensions found in the various participatory models for organizing a nascent global citizenry.

Presentation: Leigh Benin “New York City Triangle Factory Fire”
One-hundred years ago this month, the Triangle Waist Company factory burned, killing 146 workers. The outrage over this tragedy shifted public and political sentiments in New York and across the nation. Folks joined unions and insisted on improved workplace standards. Come out for a presentation of historical images and archival media drawn from new book “New York City Triangle Factory Fire” with authors Leigh Benin, Rob Linne, Adrienne Sosin, and Joel Sosinsky.

Reading: Dr. Maggie Kozel “The Color of Atmosphere”
First, we meet an idealistic young pediatrician, follow her career as a Navy doctor - where health care is universally available, and then watch her as a private practitioner. This doctor has a reverence for medical science and obvious compassion for people. However, after nearly two decades, she leaves the medical field after liability concerns and insurance claims became the focus of her work. Please welcome Dr. Maggie Kozel for a reading from her candid, witty and insightful memoir “The Color of Atmosphere: One Doctor’s Journey In and Out of Medicine” and join in a discussion about the American medical system.

Reading: David McNally “Global Slump”
In his book “Global Slump: The Economics and Politics of Crisis and Resistance,” David McNally analyzes the global financial meltdown. Please join him and learn why he asserts that neoliberal capitalism has just entered into the first stage of a prolonged crisis. David McNally is a professor of political science at York University. His previous books are “Another World is Possible: Globalization and Anti-Capitalism” and “Monsters of the Market.”

Taking inspiration from “Our Bodies, Our Selves,” the forthcoming resource guide “Trans Bodies, Trans Selves,” will provide a range of information across diverse topics of interest to trans people and their allied communities, including chapters addressing legal issues, medical care, gender theory, and sexuality. Please join Pauline Park and other team members for a discussion of their work and join them in this community involvement forum to contribute your ideas to this expansive and important project. Reading: Andrej Grubacic “Don’t Mourn, Balkanize!”
In essays, commentaries and interviews collected in “Don’t Mourn, Balkanize!: Essays After Yugoslavia,” dissident and radical historian Andrej Grubacic examines the process of balkanization and the dismantling of Yugoslavia. While some details may be familiar - such as the trial of Slobodan Milosevic and supervised independence of Kosovo - Grubacic intelligently situates recent events within a long historical context of colonialism and conquest. Come listen and learn (at 8PM!). Joining Grubacic will be Irina Ceric and Tamara Vukov of Global Balkans.

In the new book “Capital and Its Discontents: Conversations with Radical Thinkers in a Time of Tumult,” editor Sasha Lilley has produced a collection about the dynamics of the global economy with contributions from the likes of David Harvey, Ellen Meiksins Wood, Mike Davis and more. Please join Lilley and contributors Doug Henwood and Greg Albo for a presentation probing at the contradictions and the weaknesses in the global capitalist system.
