For Comic Books

I feel like the cool answer is Desert Island (http://www.desertislandbrooklyn.com/) but I don't actually shop there, so I'll say where I actually go which is St. Mark's Comics (http://www.stmarkscomics.com/).

Oh also for books that aren't comic book as well as comic books Word in Greenpoint is really nice (http://wordbrooklyn.com/)

Las Mujeres del Triunfo

These are the amazing women my cousin is helping in Guatemala.
Make your money mean something!
I gave a few of these table runners as gifts last year and they are GORGEOUS.

http://lasmujeresdeltriunfo.com

"..Eighteen women in El Triunfo, an isolated community in the highlands of Sololá, Guatemala, make up Las Mujeres del Triunfo (Women's Weaving Group of El Triunfo). Through sale of hand-woven and hand-crafted goods, they have united to support their families and preserve their culture. The women use the art of back strap weaving to express their cultural identity, create their unique clothing, and generate income for their families.

The Women's Weaving Group of El Triunfo was established in 2005 at a community meeting in El Triunfo. Women throughout El Triunfo were faced with the dire need to put food on the table for the families and support their children's education. Most women of El Triunfo cannot read and are isolated from economic opportunities in their community. In reaction to this environment four women from El Triunfo decided to sell their hand-woven crafts in nearby towns of Panajachel and Sololá to generate income to support their families. They were confident that with their weaving they could put bread on the table for their families. But such an initiative required capital that the four women did not possess alone so they announced their idea at a community meeting in El Triunfo. Fifteen women united together to collect the capital, which they invested in weaving materials and transportation costs to reach their new markets.."

off the top of my head...

I will probably post more when I give it more thought but some that come to mind right away...

High Vibe - http://www.highvibe.com/catalog/
this is my fave health food/vitamin/health education spot in the EV. Dagger has been around the hood forever and is just a really cool, down-to-earth guy who cares a lot about helping people feel their best. He also knows a lot of other small local business owners and is a great resource for finding whatever you may be looking for.

Boswyck Farms - http://www.boswyckfarms.org/
Lee Mandell started this project to educate people about hydroponic growing and urban farming. He has been giving free demonstrations all over the city, teaching people and encouraging people to discover the possibility of growing their own food. Give the awesome gift of a workshop or customized hydroponic system!

Sustainable NYC - http://stores.intuitwebsites.com/SustainableNYC/StoreFront.bok
Great gifts but watch out cause you will probably buy yourself stuff too...just an all-around fun place to be. And last time I was there, they were playing a Shilpa Ray cd!

Etsy - http://www.etsy.com/
(kind of obvious but felt it should be listed anyway)
Not only a local business that employs people within our community but also enables an artist to connect directly with a customer...cutting out the middle man put more $ directly into the artist's pocket.

Chrissy's Cooking Club - http://www.chrissyscookingclub.com/index.html
Found out about this through the Bushwick Food Coop. I have not tried it yet, but the "Group Dinner Party Workshop" seems like it could be a delicious and original gift.

Sacred - http://www.sacredbrooklyn.com/
Yes, this is where I teach yoga. And there are also dance, movement, and kid's classes! All meditation classes are free and there is also a free community yoga class every Saturday. Also, Sacred is the home of the NY Prison Yoga Project...http://bed-stuy.patch.com/articles/in-support-of-the-prison-yoga-project
Give the gift of health and also support rebuilding community.

That's all for now ;-)

CD/Music Store

This guys got pushed off of Bowery a few years ago and are now deep in Chinatown. But that makes it seem more like a secret. Go down there and tell them you are tired of everything you've listened to recently. Maybe give them some criteria like, "got anything with a female vocalist, unusual instruments, and a soothing sound, but not new agey?" and they will find you some political Tuvan throat singer accompanied by a Moog or something. Neat guys. Long time partners with John Zorn...they distribute every single title in tzadik's vast catalog.
