Good segment on Brian Lehrer yesterday about this Wired article about how peer to peer programs like apps and facebook combined with the drive of capitalism are marginalizing activity on the World Wide Web:

Prediction for the future: No more free internet.

According to Prince . . .

the entire Internet is dead. In a recent interview with the UK's Daily Mirror, Prince mused:

"The Internet's completely over. . . . The Internet's like MTV. At one time MTV was hip and suddenly it became outdated. Anyway, all these computers and digital gadgets are no good. They just fill your head with numbers and that can't be good for you."

(He also noted: "I don't see why I should give my new music to iTunes or anyone else. They won't pay me an advance for it and then they get angry when they can't get it.")

The Internet is always changing

It's sort of hard for me to imagine the Internet not being as cheap as it is now, but I sort of doubt it's going to be like this forever. There are already attempts by corporations to tier the Internet ( see Net Neutrality), and though it'd be a bummer I imagine it'll happen one day.

The notion of the free (as in liberty) Internet embodies a lot of ideals held by the people who originally created it. It's changed quite a bit, and will continue to do so as more people get there hands on it. It'll be interesting to see how this era of the Internet is described in future history texts.
