US music festivals

Hi everyone! I'm doing researchs for my school about music festivals. I'm trying to compare France and US festivals, the difference of economy, society and policies and how it impacts in the genre, size and numbers of festivals.
What american music festival can you tell me about? What do you know about them?
I don't have a lot of information yet and I'm really interrested in your point of vue regarding this topic.
In recent memory the Siren Festival has been one of the better, large scale indie music festivals in NYC. Though, recently it's hasn't been a lot to write home about in my opinion: http://siren.villagevoice.com/2010/
