Who cares about the Monkees?

You should care about them if you care about rock and roll.

Were they paid puppets or stoner genuises? Did they play their own instruments? Did it matter? And if they weren't playing, who was? And why did they make that really weird movie? I examine the whole thing here (with illustrative musical selections):

cool article, considering la was a transplant scene maybe the monkees are the ultimate criticism of it, although i could probably think of a hundred bands i would rather listen to that recorded in the 60s in la than the monkees, although i know their fans really love them so i would put them on the list, their sound is inccredibly influencial though, i saw their show at coney island this year and it was possibly the worst show i've ever seen, but i think if they had hired one of the good current twee pop bands as the backing band it would really show how influencial they were and how the music they made is as relevant as when it was fabricated, and more credible as well.
