Juice Box #2

Juice Box #2 (A party brought to you by Olive Juice Music) is slated for February 22nd at the Sidewalk Cafe as part of the Winter Antifolk Festival: Click Here for details!

Major Matt asks Liv Carrow (Huggabroomstik, Griffin and the True Believers) 5 questions (#14)

picture:

1. How did we originally meet?
We met formally, I believe, on you and Nan's roof sometime in August or September of 2006. Dibs brought me to a post-show roof gathering. It was also the first time I played one of my songs publicly. I had seen schwervon play before at sidewalk, Griffin had told me that you guys were a really amazing band and semi-famous, and ran Olive Juice. Also, Dibs had played me a 7" of The Lobster Song once, which is about 50% of the reason we ended up dating. So, I was in love with one of your songs, and in awe of your indie diy empire, before I ended up on your roof. But it was the roof when I think you first took notice of me.

2. 3 things that make you happy?
My cats, Roze and Nori. (Nori was originally Jenn Kelly's cat.) They bring me endless joy, even though they are slowly destroying my record collection.

Traveling by train is another thing. You can eat, drink, take naps, pretend you're in the past, walk around, look out the window, and at the end of it you're smack dab in the middle of your destination city. Now that I'm not always on the subway I like trains a lot more. I sort of miss the subway, even. Read more »

Major Matt asks Neil Kelly (Huggabroomstik, Club Mate, Kung Fu Crimewave) 5 questions (#13)

picture:

1. How did we originally meet?
I only remember this sort of vaguely. Dashan definitely introduced us outside of Sidewalk. If I recall correctly, you wore a beard. It was before I had ever seen you play, but Dashan had given me a mix-CD with a Schwervon song ("Breaking In") and a MMM song ("Girlfriend"), so I already knew some of your work. I think this may have been early 2003.

2. 3 things that make you happy?
Exercising my creativity is something I always enjoy. Whether through music, visual art or whatever, working on projects makes me feel good, and productive and important. I enjoy the company of intelligent, open-minded people who can participate in a healthy debate. Jokes are enjoyable as well.

Major Matt asks Dan Costello 5 questions (#12)

picture:

1. How did we originally meet?
I think we were at Sidewalk Cafe. I had heard your music because I was working there and I found a copy of "Me Me Me" in the back and borrowed it for a few days. I really liked it and then I think I did sound for an OJ night. I certainly feel like I knew of you for a while before we actually met.

2. 3 things that make you happy?
The realization of an ambitious project involving my friends. I'm thinking most recently of Brian Speaker's The Mars Chronicles or Art Sorority For Girls' new album. Both completely mind-blowing albums.

A perspective different than mine, well-articulated.

Deciding what combination of vegetables to put in a pan of risotto. This week it was shitake mushrooms and slivered carrots.

3. 3 things that make you sad?
Adults screaming at or angrily reprimanding children, especially telling them "shut up" or "you ruined it". C'mon, it's a sweater that got chocolate on it. Lighten up
(and stop buying designer sweaters for your toddler.) Read more »

Major Matt asks Betsy Cohen (The Best) 5 questions (#11)

picture:

1. How did we originally meet?
You know I'm not exactally sure how we met. I remember meeting people back in 1999 when I first started going to the Sidewalk. But I guess I started to really get to know most people (and you) when I sort of re-entered the scene when I started hanging out with Jeff Lewis around 2005... So I guess it was then :)

2. 3 things that make you happy?
Love. Love makes me really happy. Being around people that I love, channeling love, sending love to people, showing my love, and of course recieving love!

My work makes me feel really good. Emptying my mind and being a channel for information that serves people's highest good is an honor. Also knowing that people and the Universe trust me to assist individuals in strengthening their connection to Source Energy and their own soul is deeply humbling.
Reciently, when I hear a live choir it makes me so happy and filled with love I cry.
Also animals!!!!!

Anti War Protest in Times Square 12/16/10

picture:

Last night I attended a War Protest in Times Square that was followed by a small civil disobedience act in support of a similar rally that in Washington DC where 135 people were arrested for chaining themselves to the White House fence. http://www.opednews.com/articles/135-Arrested-For-Civil-Dis-by-Rob-Kall-....

I'm sorry to report that I was among some of the younger people there. But I found the event very inspiring and I'd be interested in learning about or even helping organize a group of younger people or musicians that could help draw a bit more attention to this very important issue. At the end of the protest a small group of people blocked the the traffic in Times Square in an act of civil disobedience against US involvement in various wars around the world. After about 5 minutes they were arrested and placed in a police van. Here are some pictures of people I consider real American Heros!

Major Matt asks Jeffrey Lewis 5 questions (#10)

picture:

1. How did we meet?
I don't remember officially meeting you, Matt... I remember that I was playing the open mic at Sidewalk every single Monday night for a couple years when I started out, like 1998 and 99, and one time you showed up to play and Lach whispered to me "do you know Major Matt's stuff? He's one of the all-time greatest." So you were like a serious elder statesman whom I was scared to approach. I guess by 2001 we were definitely hanging out a bit and I was doing some recordings with you but I don't remember how that started.

2. 3 things that make you happy?
1) When people like me
2) Creativity, in myself and others
3) When I find a great obscure psychedelic record for cheap - like, I just got two original beat up vinyls by The West Coast Pop Art Experimental Band for 7.99 each, unbelievable!

3. 3 things that make you sad?
1) Right wing politics
2) Low self-esteem, in myself and others
3) The unfairness of life - big surprise.

Goodbye Blue Monday December 10, 2010

picture:

Last night's Purple Organ curated event at Goodbye Blue Monday featured a nice line up of the usual suspects. GBM's recent facelift (word has it they're gonna start serving brunch soon) and a new interested in photography created an excitement for me, personally, to check out this bill of old friends. I forgot to get shots of the opening mini open mic which featured a few acoustic numbers by Purple Organ, Neil Kelly of Huggabroomstik, Toby Goodshank, and Joe Crow Ryan.

The first act of the night was The Fools. I feel like this pic kind of captured how I see The Fools. They are 2 individuals seamlessly in sync, both understated and complimentary, but shining in their own way.
IMG_0755

The second act of the evening was Cornhole Connection: An on going experimental improv group centered around the whims of Julie LaMendola (Ching Chong Song) and Nan Turner (Schwervon!) Read more »

HOW TO ACT BAD, a film starring ADAM GREEN

picture:

For the past year filmmaker Dima Dubson has been following musician and friend Adam Green around New York, Los Angeles and Europe documenting the life of this cult music troubadour. HOW TO ACT BAD will bring you up close, and offer an intimate portrait of the singer/songwriter, artist, rock star and human being Adam Green, from Dima Dubson's unobstructed perspective.

The film will reflect the excitement and artistry in the creative life Adam is living - from his music to his paintings and sculptures to his current filmmaking project (known as “The Lake Room Movie” starring Macaulay Culkin, Devendra Banhart, Jack Dishel and Dev Hynes among others). HOW TO ACT BAD will also offer a candid peek into Adam's personal life and show him both alone (as alone as he can be in the presence of Dima and his camera) and with his friends.

New Paleface video "You Will Get What You Want"

picture:

Just in time for the holiday season PF and Mo have just released a new video for their song "You Will Get What You Want" (Scott Mckibben). Coupled with some compelling live show footage (Is that a Summer Antifolk Fest T-shirt I see in some of the shots?) the video portrays a number of Paleface fans with some thoughtful wishes. Check out their website for info about their latest release and up and coming shows. Here's to getting what you want this year! http://www.olivejuicemusic.com/artists/paleface

Major Matt asks Josepha Conrad (Susie Asado, Crazy For Jane) 5 questions (#9)

picture:

1. How did we meet?
We met at the "We Are Fucking Independent Festival" in Cologne in 2005. You and Nan (Schwervon) played and Kimya Dawson and Matty Popchart and I was there with my brother Philipp. We had just started performing as Crazy for Jane and we were so excited to meet you guys.

2. 3 things that make you happy?
1. Singing songs with friends, family and or strangers
2. Taking walks in the park
3. Drinking Green Tea

1. The poverty that I encounter everywhere
2. The state of the environment
3. War

4. What is your favorite color?
Green - moss green - the luminous kind

5. 3 people who inspire you?
1. Gertrude Stein - the way she lived her life and work so fully, with conviction and humor. Her ability to keep writing her strange world of writings without getting distracted by others not acknowledging her world, even ridiculing her.
2. My brother Philipp - his ability to summon helicopters and go on grand adventures that I would never dream possible. Read more »

Betsy Cohen is not just just the super sweet ukulele strumming front woman for the uber catchy songwriting project: The Best. She's also the host of her own NYC cable access show featuring a variety of fun guests and entertaining segments. A recent episode of Betsy's Place (Episode #6) features Fran (JoFranna) in "Crafty Corner" making a homemade hair broach, Elizabeth Devlin playing "Music On The Bed", friend Zach making carmel corn as well as lots of other fun stuff including a dance video featuring the Schwervon! song "Dog Walkers Of the World Unite." Check it out!

Major Matt asks Dibson T. Hoffweiler (Dibs, Urban Barnyard, Old Hat) 5 questions (#8)

picture:

1. How did we meet?
In 2002, I went to the Sidewalk Cafe to see The Babyskins and Barry Bliss, whom I had seen open for the Moldy Peaches at the Bowery Ballroom. I thought I needed to be there for the whole night, so I showed up at 7:30 and saw some guy play some songs. Over the weeks, I came to learn he's the one who runs Olive Juice Music.

Being the young, motivated self I wasn't, I talked to Matt about interning in his studio. At the time I wanted to learn more about recording, and I thought that doing some work with Matt would be a good way to do that. Matt had me over for a recording session with Karen Hancock/Knot Pinebox. I realized that I wanted to learn about recording, but I had few projects to apply those learnings to. I never followed up. Major Matt asks Angela Carlucci (Baby Skins, Double Deuce, Little Cobweb) 5 questions (#7)

picture:

1. How did we meet?
We met at the Sidewalk Cafe, of course! I think it was in 2001. I had been listening to "Me Me Me" way before I even met you. Toby (my brother) gave it to me because he thought I would like it. And I did! I didn't really know anyone when I first moved to New York, and being very shy, it took me a long time to make friends that I felt like I could hang out with. So everyday after work at The Museum of Natural History, I used to just walk around the city until I either started to get hungry, or until I tired myself out. I remember listening to that album on a lot on my epic three-hour walks! Now when I revisit that album, it brings back lots of good memories! Walking and observing is still one of my favorite things to do here

2. 3 things that make you happy?
a.) To give love and to be loved in return. So, sharing love!
b.) Making the people that I care about laugh.
c.) Either dancing so hard that I sweat, or slow dancing in my apartment.

John Peel (30 August 1939 – 25 October 2004)

picture:

PeelSessions_90x90.jpg My first exposure to John Peel were those odd looking records, usually in the bargan bin, with all the writing on them, at my local independent record store back in a suburb of Kansas City, KS in the late 80's. They confused me as a kid and, to be honest, I typically steered clear of them. It wasn't until many years later that I understood the significance of these records and the man behind them. In all the interviews I've seen or read of John Peel he was a man that oozed genuineness. His love and respect for not just the music but the cultural importance of the music for my generation and beyond is unparalleled. And I'm a bit embarrassed to say, even years after his death, I'm still discovering the immense influence his work has had on me. Better late than never I guess. Read more »

Nov. 2nd is Election Day!

picture:

It's mid term election time. The AARP has an excellent online tool to find out about elections that relate to you most directly and the great thing is you don't have to be retired to use it.: http://vote15.aarp.org/?cmp=KNC-VOTE&sfr=1287934631420. I found this to be a really great resource for getting a bit of info about the candidates. You can even build your own ballot, print it out, or have it sent to you by email, and take it with you to the voting booth.

Here's a couple of other links that can be really helpful in finding more info about the elections like polling hours and the closest polling center near you:

Major Matt asks Barry Bliss 5 questions (#6)

picture:

1. How did we meet?
Actually shaking hands and saying hello? I do not recall. First memory of you is you on stage with Lach signing a contract.

2. 3 things that make you happy?
Telling the truth, helping others, and getting rid of something I have that I don't need.

3. 3 things that make you sad?
If I am greedy I am sad. If I am selfish I am sad. If I hide I am sad.

4. What is your favorite color?
To quote an old zen patriarch "Preferences are a sickness of the mind."

5. 3 people who inspire you?
People alive and growing/thriving right now? Heyzeus909 aka Mountain Man. Anton Krupicka. Journalist and Former War Correspondent Chris Hedges.

Major Matt asks Soléna Toussaint‎ (OJ Summer Intern) 5 questions (#5)

picture:

1. How did we meet?
We met at one of your shows in Nantes (France), I think in 2008. But I was too shy to talk to you so we really met the next time you came to Nantes to tour with Schwervon!. Rahim introduced us and I offered to host the two of you at my place. And then I became your intern and that's how we got to know each other really.

2. 3 things that make you happy?
My cat, chilling with my boyfriend and friends, going to amazing music shows.

3. 3 things that make you sad?
When my loved ones are hurting mostly. Sometimes I also hate that the world is so big and people so far from me. Injustices make me sad when I'm not as optimistic as I can be and when I think there's nothing to do about them.

4. What is your favorite color?
Red, definitely. But every once in a while I can have a new fleeting favourite color.

Major Matt asks Toby Goodshank 5 questions (#2)

picture:

1. How did we meet?
Major Matt and I met at Sidewalk, for sure. Circa 2001. Even before we met I had seen him play the open mic there with Nan. I'd also see him at Alice's (RIP) occasionally, while I would be having breakfast with Crystal. I wanted to say hello but I was too shy. I vaguely remember him having a soul patch. At some point we exchanged CDs, saw each other play a few times, and he extended the invitation to me to participate in the Olive Juice collective. I was psyched because not only was I a huge fan of Matt's, but I had/have a big ol' boner for the music of Prewar Yardsale, and wanted to be down with this crew in the worst way, which in my opinion were on par with that of Jesus Christ and His Apostles.

2. 3 things that make you happy?
Oh man, three things that make me happy are giving and receiving genuine love and affection, feeling ecstasy both naturally and artificially (preferably the former), and singing with every ounce of strength that I can summon.

3. 3 things that make you sad? Read more »

Major Matt asks Nan Turner 5 questions (#1)

1. How did we meet?
We met at the sidewalk café. Jon Berger told me I had to go hear Major Matt Mason play because you were really good. You were. And also cute.

2. 3 things that make you happy?
being creative, eating italian or french food combined with a dark chocolately dessert, the ocean and swimming in it.

3. 3 things that make you sad?
conflict with people I love, poor health, and when I have to work crappy day jobs.

4. What is your favorite color?
blue and green. Sometimes together.

5. 3 things that you really, really love?
playing music & performing, dinner and movie nites (especially movies about musicians and dancers), touring, and reading memoirs (okay that was 4 things).

Online video of Major Matt Mason USA performing "Follow Her" September 1, 2010 @ The Sidewalk Cafe.

picture:

Major Matt Mason USA is the stage name for songwriter/producer Matt Roth’s solo projects. Inspired by the homemade tapes of Daniel Johnston, MMM’s first recordings appeared in cassette format around 1994. He has since released 5 full length albums (on CD and CDR) and two 7” singles on Olive Juice Music. The music is riddled with influences that range from the paired down songwriting of early Bob Dylan to the more noisy elements of The Velvet Underground, Neil Young or Yo La Tengo. Although he's dabbled with various live band arrangements typically his performances consist of MMM singing over chunky self accompanied acoustic guitar strums. Matt is also a member of the bands Schwervon! and Kansas State Flower. This particular concert marked a 2 year anniversary the "One-off" spoken word concept: where on the day of each live show an original prose-poem was written as the sole purpose of being recited as part of that evenings performance. The concept was to have an original piece of materiel that was totally unique to each performance. Read more »

Yesterday's Blog Today

picture:

I think I'm suffering from post New OJ website depression. I'm a bit uninspired which isn't so great considering I've got a show tomorrow night at Sidewalk cafe. Insert shameless self promotion here. I'm taking most of the day tomorrow to practice and work on a good daily poem. I'm excited for the JoFranna CD release and also interested in checking out Honeybird of whom I made a random myspace connection with about a year ago. I'm munching on some discounted "red" kale that I picked up at the Co Op last friday and I'm digging it. It's not as sweet as regular kale and I kind of like that. It tastes more like spinach. I realized that pretty much any of it tastes good as long as you steam it and mix enough salt and pepper with it. Read more »
