At Home He's a Tourist

picture:

So it was the afternoon so I got a pint of Cherry Garcia and went home to listen to the radio and eat ice cream. I decided to be productive so I tuned into the New Afternoon Show. I love the New Afternoon Show. I wish it was the New 24 hours, 7 days a week show, so I wouldn't have to change the dial. I can't get WFMU uptown (what's up with that new transmitter?) so the only good music stations are CBS and The New Afternoon Show. The New Afternoon Show is challenging, they play all the new, most cred indie bands and labels in all the indie genres except hip-hop, hip hop has it's own show. I'm also prepared to hear a lot of new things when I listen because if I think I have an in depth ear to the world of indie rock, I quickly realize I'm only listening to the tip of the iceberg. I mean no joke the D.J.'s and program manager are indie music genius. The first band on sounds like Confusion is Sex Sonic Youth, then some new wave lite bands. I hear a commercial for another show and the narrator sounds like Werner Herzog. I love his jungle movies. I saw Grizzly Man on Sundance and it was awesome. Read more »

USA Tour 2011: No Hassle & No Stars

Day 3 and 4

These days were originally an e-mail to Greg and Ahndraya, but I wrote so much I figured it could save me time and be my next diary entry. (with some editing)

The treatment in Buffalo has been A +, the crowd not so big (maybe 40 people)- the turn out was probably hurt because there was another show in town-The Sadies and Jesse Sykes
We played Sugar City
And the folks there were super nice, probably one of the only US promoters who actually cooked us a dinner. (and had yummy brownies) Read more »

USA Tour Diary 2011-It Feels Like I Got A Splinter Up My Thumbnail, Oh Wait I Did.

picture:

Day 2 of tour

I wake up early to move Jeff’s car before we leave for Rochester. When I reach for my socks my thumb brushes up against the coffee table and I get a long splinter up my fingernail. AAAAAAAAAAA. The pain. I rush to the bathroom and try and pull it out. I only manage to break off the tip. “AAAAAAAA, ow, ow, ow” Oh my fucking god, this is un-real. My mom comes into the bathroom with some tweezers and quickly pulls out the splinter. What a mom! A real “Pro” - mom. Man. I take a couple advil. It hurts like hell. I run downstairs to move the car. Occupy 11-17-11
http://www.occupywallst.org/
It was a long day that started around 6 am for me. I headed up to Liberty Park for an early morning protest/celebration honoring the 2 month anniversary of the OCW movement. There was a full day of non violent action planned. The morning event was a march in front of the Wall Street Stock Exchange to symbolically call for a shut down of the corrupt and unregulated financial practices that take place there. A press release about the protest said they wanted to make it an especially musical one and that you should write your story, in the form of a slogan, on a sign and display it at the protest. I decided to bring a long a mini djembe that my sister gave me.

Occupy Liberty Park 11-15-11

picture:

After a long work day I headed down to the OWS General Assembly yesterday around 7pm at Liberty Park. I'd been following the displacement of the occupiers earlier that morning. I managed to catch the last half of the GA. The big message was the day of protest on the 17th. Initially there were roughly 1000 people but the crowd thinned out as the night went on. There appeared to be a fresh wave of energy throughout the park. The footlights that covered the parks floor had been turned back on. I hadn't noticed them on my previous visits. They gave the entire space a kind invigorating glow. The entire perimeter of the grounds is now surrounded by heavy metal guard rails and there is a strong presence of private security guards in yellow reflective vests. The new strictly enforced law is no sleeping bags, tents or sleeping in the park. After the GA, a smaller group of people went to march on the city courthouse to protest the polices treatment of some of the female occupiers that were recently arrested. At various points throughout the evening people brought plates of food, pizza and even cookies and sweets. Read more »

Thursday November 17th International Day of Action

picture:

http://occupywallst.org/action/november-17th/
On Thursday November 17th, the two month anniversary of the Occupy Wall Street movement, we call upon the 99% to participate in a national day of direct action and celebration!
New York City
BREAKFAST: Shut Down Wall Street - 7:00 a.m.

Enough of this economy that exploits and divides us. It's time we put an end to Wall Street's reign of terror and begin building an economy that works for all. We will gather in Liberty Square at 7:00 a.m., before the ring of the Trading Floor Bell, to prepare to confront Wall Street with the stories of people on the frontlines of economic injustice. There, before the Stock Exchange, we will exchange stories rather than stocks.
LUNCH: Occupy The Subways - 3:00 p.m.

We will start by Occupying Our Blocks! Then throughout the five boroughs, we will gather at 16 central subway hubs and take our own stories to the trains, using the "People's Mic".

At Home He's a Tourist

picture:

The Dirtbombs are playing at the Bell House and I'm thinking of going. I've been a fan of The Dirtbombs since the White Stripes Detroit craze. I've seen them a couple of times and really enjoyed their shows. I have a bunch of their records and they're always a terrific listen. They have out a new triple 12 inch LP of detroit techno songs. ALthough they do a lot of original songs, The Dirtbombs are also musicologists, they also put out an LP of r&b and soul covers. So I call Matt to see if he wants to go. Matt tells me he's going to Brooklyn to see Christie's band play so I decided to go because I've never seen her band play before. Actually no one has seen her band play before because this is their first show, they've been rehearsing for a year and now they're doing a show. Matt and I get to the show and the band goes on and they're really good. Post rock, prog, instrumentals. I't always cool to hear some different styles of music you don' t usually listen to. The music was dramatic my senses were really heightened plus there was a film of protest marchers projected behind the band so it was extra dramatic. Read more »

Rock 'n Rollers Don't Bathe

Vids
Nan being away has given me a lot of time to fill in my day. Aside from a new part time live sound gig and some recent studio work with the bands Elastic No No Band and Red Gretchen some of my closer friends may have noticed that after owning a Macbook for about 5 years I finally got around to using the iMovie program. It turns out it's a pretty darn easy program to use. I've decided to start combining my recent interest in photography with my not so recent interest in music. Here's what's coming out. Stay tuned for actual video footage. Uhhh maybe?
